Memories of Summer - Japanese painting
Ai Kawamura is a Japanese painter of what is called « Nihonga ».
Nihonga is an art form following traditional Japanese painting techniques with a history of more than 1000 years. She uses those techniques and applies them to her work in a more contemporary way. She also has recently worked on some abstract paintings, but always in the Nihonga spirit.
She is established in Fukuoka, but she has been showing her work during exhibitions all over Japan as well as overseas.
The themes of her paintings are usually linked to Japanese traditions or seasons, for example, traditional flowers. But some of her paintings are more abstract.
She is inspired by the kachō fūei philosophy, which conveys the beauties of nature and the harmony between nature and man. Her art translates the heart of Japan and the aesthetic sense of the Japanese people.
Ms Ai Kawamura often uses yaki-haku in her art. It is an old technique that has been used in Japan for over 400 years. It consists in using silver leaves. The leaves are first stick on the paper. Then, those silver leaves are sulfurated through heat created by applying sulfur powder. When sulfurated, the silver turns black. It is a good technique to make the colors look more vibrant. It also gives the art a wabi-sabi feel.
